A very strange effect

I’ve noticed a strange new effect in my use of the supermemo algorithm for language learning. Often, when the part of my mind of which I’m more aware sees a flashcard come up and says “Don’t know that one”, some other part of my mind has already got the answer.

In the past, I’ve thought it really strange that sometimes when you ask someone a question, they seem to be unsure of whether they know the answer; I’ve tended to think this is ridiculous, as I’ve always been quite sure of the limits of my knowledge: I’ve been able to produce either an answer, or “I don’t know”, very promptly. But now I’m finding that I know things that I don’t know that I know!
