Geeknic and hills

I went to a geeknic for the first time, yesterday in Dublin. It was good to meet up for general nerdy discussions and good company… Dublin’s a fair way to go (from the other side of Ireland) for an afternoon’s event, so instead of getting the train up for the day, I drove to Wicklow […]

Connecting up my GM862 — the first step towards my DIY vehicle tracker

At last, all the parts have arrived (or so I thought) for connecting up my GM862 via a breakout board, and so I plugged the module in to the board, and found that the antennae had a different type of connector from those on the module, so I couldn’t do any actual GSM/GPRS or GPS […]

I’m going to a GeekNic

I hope to make it to the July Irish Geeknic in Dún Laoghaire this coming Sunday. Seeing that rail tickets cost more than driving there, but I don’t like to make longish driving journeys for just one thing, I’ll probably travel up Friday evening or Saturday, and find a campsite somewhere in County Wicklow, which […]

Cat names and status

Ruaraidh got through his operation comfortably enough, and enjoyed a brief spell as a housecat while recovering from the anaesthetic.  (They’re all outdoor cats.) The feral female who is becoming a bit tamer is now “Lilith” — still slightly sinister, but not as bad as her old name(s). And my name for the well-hung feral […]

Learning several languages at once

I’ve long been interested in human languages, and have learnt the basics of several. I’m just starting to be more systematic about it (after at least a year of good intentions to do so). The tipping point was switching from the default Leitner algorithm and trying the “sm5” algorithm, for the Emacs flashcard program. This […]

Changing habits

One of the reasons I started this blog was to help me in changing habits. The idea partly came from an article I found, that stated people who kept their resolutions tended to have broken their goal into smaller steps and rewarded themselves when they achieved one of these. They also told their friends about […]

Cat news

Pangaroo has recovered properly, and tomorrow it’s Ruaraidh’s appointment for castration (according to the vet, castrated male cats live half again as long as uncastrated ones). The feral female, who I refer to as “Mrs NastyCat” or “The Root of All Evil” (the latter as she produces all the unpleasant kittens) has started to let […]

Happy cat

I took Pangaroo to the vet to have his stitches out this morning. He even purred as it was done! And the vet said he’s recovering faster than expected.

This could explain something…

Years ago, I developed RSI, mostly manifesting itself in my lower forearms. Over the last six years or so, I’ve brought it under control, with quite a bit of physiotherapy to start with, and exercises and stretching. Now, I get physiotherapy for it a couple of times per year, mostly if I’ve neglected to do […]
