Reason for arrest: The computer says you look suspicious

With fascinated horror I read the article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10175960.stm about a CCTV system with software to detect suspicious behaviour automatically.  The article presents it in the context of military counter-insurgency operations; I’m glad that NuLabour got voted out, because they seemed to have the attitude that protest against government policy was to be treated as insurgency, and I’m sure that a system like this would have been deployed against their own citizens.  Not only would the police have been arresting innocents who didn’t match the behaviour they thought was right, but they would have been arresting (or, of course, shooting) people who their computer marked as suspicious.  I’m pleased that the new government seems less keen on this kind of thing… but even more pleased that I emigrated some years ago!
